24th February 2021
Hello everyone,
I hope you and your family are staying well. Maggie and I are fine. Talks have become Zoom events to local societies, but none on cruises of course. But we’re looking forward to getting back on the circuit later in the year.
Two bits of book news which I thought you might like to hear.
First, my book on Magna Carta – which topped the Amazon history best-seller list for five weeks - has just come out in a new edition.
The title has been slightly changed.
But more important, the text size has been increased to make it easier on the eyes.
It’s available from all good booksellers, and on Amazon worldwide
And I can now reveal that my next book is with The History Press and will be published in June.
England from a Side-Saddle:
Travelling with Celia Fiennes
on her Great Journeys 1697-98
When Celia Fiennes mounted her horse and set off on her great journeys, it was a time when women didn’t do such things. It could be gruelling, unhealthy and dangerous. As she discovered, most roads were unsigned, marshy tracks, lodgings could be filthy and vermin-ridden, highwaymen lay in wait for the unwary.
She kept a detailed diary. She reports on the brutal justice system and political shenanigans of the time, and is fascinated by industry and commerce – workshops, shipping and especially coal-pits and tin mines.
As we follow the route Celia Fiennes took, we see through her eyes an England of 320 years ago, and learn of the courage, determination and curiosity of one woman who was centuries ahead of her time.
Finally, as well as the new Magna Carta, I’ve got a few spare copies of all my books (which in other years would of course have gone to audiences at talks). If you’d like any of them – signed - just send an email to
derekjtaylorbooks@gmail.com
specifying which one, with your address. No need to pay till you receive them.
All include p&p in the UK (extra worldwide)
Maggie and I wish you a happy and healthy 2021, and hope to see you soon.
Warm wishes
–Derek
